The Varsity baseball team lost the opening game of the Frontier Tournament Saturday 11-1. Kyle Cook led off the game with a double and scored on Jordan Stillwell’s RBI groundout. The Gophers were unable to scratch across another run, but hit the ball extremely hard on a number of occasions. Kale Morris took the loss on the mound, but threw effectively in his first outing.
In the consolation game the Gophers defeated Morgan Township 9-8. The Gophers were down 3-0 going into the 5th inning and scored one run on an overthrown pick off attempt by the catcher. In the top of the sixth, starter Chase Joseph set the Cherokees down in order on 7 pitches, and the Gopher bats came to life. Kyle Cook had a 2 RBI single to put the Gophers up 4-3. We would tack on 3 more runs in the inning to lead 7-3. In the top of the 7th, the Gophers had some defensive miscues and let the lead slip away. Trailing 8-7 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Seth Cook took a lead off walk, Grant Ream laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, Kristian Peters walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd. On the 2nd pitch, Freshmen Cayde Selke laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that the Cherokee pitcher picked up and threw over the 3rd baseman’s head and into left field. Seth Cook and Kristian Peters both scored giving the Gophers a come from behind victory.
The Gophers have a busy week this week with a Tuesday game at Faith Christian, the home opener on Wednesday vs. Lewis Cass, a home game against Tri-County on Thursday, and finish off the week hosting county rival Frankfort on Saturday. Come out and support our team this week!
