The Clinton Prairie Gophers defeated the South Newton Rebels 57-40 in the opening round of the Lady Gopher Holiday Tournament Friday.

After a slow first quarter (down 5-4 after eight minutes), the Gophers outscored the Rebels 23-7 in the second quarter to take a 27-12 lead going into halftime.

Pearson hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, which gave Clinton Prairie a 10-7 lead. She finished the game with 11 points.

Midway through the second quarter Robison found Franks for the basket while taking the foul. Franks hit the ensuing free throw, which gave the Gophers and 11-point lead.

Clinton Prairie extended its lead to 21 points in the third quarter after sophomore forward Cheyenne Grissom hit one of her seven field goals while taking the foul. She finished the game with a team-high 17 points.

The Gophers led 46-28 after 24 minutes of play and held on for the 17-point victory, advancing to the championship game.
