Despite seeing its seven-run lead whittled down by the end, the Clinton Prairie Lady Gophers still held off Clinton Central for an 8-6 victory on Tuesday. Clinton Central scored five runs in the failed comeback on a fielder’s choice by Davidson, a error, a single by Jenkins, and a single by Buzan.
Clinton Prairie earned the victory despite allowing Clinton Central to score five runs in the fourth inning. Davidson, Gomez, Jenkins, and Buzan all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Clinton Prairie Gophers Varsity fired up the offense in the first inning, when Bower induced Hadley Wilson to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.
Clinton Prairie scored five runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Layne Snyder and Wilson, a triple by Katelyn Ramsey, and a double by Rebekah Stephens.
Stephens toed the rubber for Clinton Prairie. She surrendered six runs on 11 hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking zero.
Bower was on the rubber for Clinton Central. She lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and eight runs while striking out four. Perkins threw three and a third innings in relief.
Stephens led Clinton Prairie Gophers Varsity with two hits in two at bats.
Clinton Central had 11 hits in the game. Whitcomb, Ostler, and Davidson each had multiple hits for Clinton Central. Whitcomb went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Clinton Central in hits. CP is now 7-5 overall and 3-0 in the Hoosier Heartland Conference.
